iPhone No Sound? Here’s Why (And What To Check)
Your iPhone has no sound. Maybe it’s silent for everything — no ringer, no media, no calls. Maybe the ringer doesn’t work but videos do. Maybe calls connect but you can’t hear the other person. Maybe the sound is distorted or crackly. Or maybe it happened after the phone got wet.
The good news is that most iPhone audio faults are settings issues, not hardware faults. The mute switch, the volume, Do Not Disturb, and Bluetooth account for the majority of “no sound” complaints. And all of those are free to fix.
The key is working out whether the fault is a setting or a component. The symptom tells you where to look.
This page covers the eight most common sound fault patterns, the symptoms to look for, and the checks you can perform yourself. If you need the complete diagnostic sequence for determining whether the fault is the speaker, the receiver, the audio IC, or a setting, the full guide is linked at the bottom.

Quick Diagnosis
No sound at all: a settings issue — mute switch, volume, Do Not Disturb, or Bluetooth.
No ringer: the mute switch or the ringer volume.
No sound on calls: a receiver fault or a Bluetooth routing issue.
No sound on videos: the media volume is at zero.
No sound on speakerphone: a speaker fault or a routing issue.
No sound through headphones: debris in the port or a failed port.
Distorted sound: debris in the speaker grille or a failed speaker.
No sound after water damage: water in the speaker or a failed audio component.
Why Your iPhone Has No Sound
An iPhone has three audio outputs:
The bottom speaker. Produces loud audio for media, ringers, and speakerphone.
The receiver. Produces sound for calls held to the ear. On iPhone 7 and later, it also acts as a second speaker for stereo audio.
The Taptic Engine. Not audio, but produces haptic feedback.
Because there are separate outputs, the symptom tells you which one has failed. If media plays but calls don’t, the receiver is the fault. If calls work on speakerphone but not held to the ear, the receiver is the fault. If nothing works, the speaker or the audio IC is the fault.
Common Causes
Mute switch engaged. On iPhone 6 through 10, the physical mute switch has been flipped.
Volume at zero. The volume has been turned down.
Bluetooth connected. The phone is sending audio to a paired Bluetooth device.
Do Not Disturb. Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is blocking all sounds.
Debris in the speaker grille. Dust or lint is blocking the speaker.
Failed speaker. The bottom speaker has failed.
Failed receiver. The receiver at the top of the screen has failed.
Failed audio IC. The audio IC on the logic board has failed.
Water damage. Water has entered the speaker or the audio circuit.
Symptoms To Look For
The symptom tells you which component is at fault.
No Sound At All
Settings issue. Check the mute switch, volume, Do Not Disturb, and Bluetooth.
No Ringer
The mute switch or the ringer volume. Media works but the ringer doesn’t.
No Sound on Calls
The receiver has failed, or audio is routed to a Bluetooth device. Try speakerphone as a test.
No Sound on Videos
The media volume is at zero. Press the volume up button while a video plays.
No Sound on Speakerphone
The speaker has failed, or audio is routed elsewhere. Try media playback as a test.
No Sound Through Headphones
Debris in the port, a failed port, or a failed adapter.
Distorted Sound
Debris in the speaker grille, or a failed speaker.
No Sound After Water Damage
Water in the speaker or a failed audio component. Let it dry first.
How to Diagnose the Fault
Step 1 — Check the Mute Switch
On iPhone 6 through 10, look at the left edge. If the switch shows orange, the phone is muted. On iPhone 15, check the Action Button in Control Centre.
Step 2 — Check the Volume
Press the volume up button. The volume indicator should appear. Press it several times to raise the volume.
Step 3 — Check Do Not Disturb
Settings, Focus. Turn off all Focus modes.
Step 4 — Check Bluetooth
Settings, Bluetooth. Turn off Bluetooth as a test. A paired Bluetooth device that’s out of range can still grab audio.
Step 5 — Try Headphones
If sound works through headphones but not the speaker, the speaker has failed.
Step 6 — Try Speakerphone
If speakerphone works but calls held to the ear don’t, the receiver has failed.
Step 7 — Try a Voice Memo
If the voice memo records correctly, the microphone is working.
Step 8 — Clean the Speaker Grille
Use a soft brush to remove dust and lint from the bottom speaker grille.
Fixing Specific Sound Faults
iPhone No Sound At All
The general fault. Check the settings first. If settings are correct and headphones work but the speaker doesn’t, the speaker has failed.
iPhone No Ringer
Check the mute switch and the ringer volume. These are separate from media volume.
iPhone No Sound on Calls
Try speakerphone. If it works, the receiver has failed. If not, the microphone or audio routing is the fault.
iPhone No Sound on Videos
The media volume is at zero. Press the volume up button while a video plays.
iPhone No Sound on Speakerphone
Try media playback. If media works, the fault is call routing. If not, the speaker has failed.
iPhone No Sound Through Headphones
Check the port for debris. Try a different pair of headphones.
iPhone Sound Distorted
Clean the speaker grille. If the distortion persists, the speaker has failed.
iPhone No Sound After Water Damage
Let the phone dry for 48 hours. If the sound is distorted, the speaker may have residue. If there’s no sound at all, the speaker has failed.
iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14 No Sound
The diagnostic sequence is the same across models. Check the settings first.
iPhone Speaker Not Working
The speaker has failed. A replacement is $20 to $60 for the part, or $80 to $150 fitted.
iPhone Loud Speaker Not Working
Same fault. The bottom speaker has failed.
iPhone Volume Not Working
The volume buttons may have failed. This is a separate fault from the speaker. A replacement volume flex is $10 to $30 for the part.
Repair Cost Guide
Speaker replacement: $20 to $60 for the part, $80 to $150 fitted.
Receiver replacement: $15 to $40 for the part, $80 to $150 fitted.
Audio IC repair: $100 to $200 fitted.
Headphone jack replacement: $20 to $50 for the part, $80 to $150 fitted.
Lightning or USB-C port: $15 to $65 for the part, $80 to $200 fitted.
Mute switch flex: $10 to $30 for the part, $50 to $120 fitted.
When to Repair vs Bin
Repair if:
The fault is the speaker, the receiver, or the mute switch
The phone is under four years old
The repair cost is under half the cost of a comparable new phone
The phone has no other faults
Bin if:
The audio IC has failed on a phone over five years old
The fault is water damage that’s reached the board
The phone has multiple failed components
The repair cost exceeds half the cost of a comparable new phone
Safety Warning
Electrical risk. Lithium batteries are a fire risk if punctured, bent, or crushed. Do not attempt to remove a swollen battery.
Display risk. The display flex cables are thin and fragile. Prying the display at the wrong angle tears them.
Water risk. Do not charge a phone that’s been in water.
Heat risk. A phone that gets hot while charging should be unplugged and allowed to cool.
FAQ

Why is my iPhone ringer not working?
The mute switch or the ringer volume. Check both in Settings, Sounds & Haptics.
Why is my iPhone not making sound on calls?
The receiver has failed, or the call audio is being routed elsewhere. Try speakerphone as a test.
Why is my iPhone not making sound on videos?
The media volume is at zero. Press the volume up button.
Why is my iPhone speakerphone not working?
The speaker has failed, or audio is being routed to a Bluetooth device.
Why is my iPhone not working with headphones?
Debris in the port, a failed port, or a failed adapter.
