Bosch Dishwasher Fault Codes

Bosch Dishwasher Fault Codes: What They Mean and How To Fix Them

Your Bosch dishwasher has stopped mid-cycle and is showing a fault code. Maybe it’s E15, E24, E25, or one of the less common codes like E09, E22, E17, or H01. Either way, the code tells you something specific — and in most cases, the fault is diagnosable at home.

This page covers every common Bosch dishwasher fault code, what each one means, and which of the three most common codes have their own dedicated guides. If you need the complete diagnostic sequence for a specific code, the guides are linked at the bottom.

Bosch Dishwasher Fault Codes

Quick Diagnosis

E15: flood protection has triggered. Water is in the base tray.

E24: drain fault. Usually a blocked filter or drain hose.

E25: drain fault. Usually the drain pump itself.

E09: heating fault. The heating element or sensor has failed.

E22: filter or drain fault. Often a blocked filter.

E17: water inlet fault. The machine isn’t filling properly.

H01: heating fault. The heating circuit has failed.

What Bosch Fault Codes Mean

Bosch dishwashers use a fault code system that displays as a letter and a two-digit number — E15, E24, E25, and so on. The codes are consistent across most Bosch models manufactured in the last 15 years.

Each code points to a specific fault. Some codes have more than one possible cause, and the diagnostic sequence narrows it down.

E15 — Flood Protection Triggered

E15 is the most common Bosch fault code. It means the flood protection system has triggered. Water has collected in the base tray, the float switch has risen, and the machine has shut down to prevent flooding.

This is a safety code, not a fault in itself. The machine is working correctly. It has detected water where there shouldn’t be water.

Seeing E15 specifically? It’s the most common Bosch dishwasher code, and the most misunderstood — it means water has collected in the base tray and tripped the flood switch, not that the control board has failed. Read the full E15 fault code diagnosis before ordering any parts.

Common causes:

A failed door seal

A loose hose connection

A cracked hose

Trapped water from a previous fault

Overfilling

A failed sump seal

What to do: check for visible leaks at the door and hoses first. Then access the base tray and drain it if it contains water. Check the float switch moves freely. If the leak keeps returning, the underlying fault hasn’t been fixed.

For the full diagnostic sequence, see the Bosch Dishwasher E15 Fault Code guide.

E24 — Drain Fault (Blockage)

E24 means the machine has tried to drain and failed. It usually points to a blockage in the drain path.

Common causes:

A clogged filter

A blocked or kinked drain hose

Debris in the sump

A blocked check valve

What to do: clean the filter first. That’s the most common cause and it’s free. Then check the drain hose for kinks or blockages.

For the full diagnostic sequence, see the Bosch Dishwasher E24 Fault Code guide.

E25 — Drain Fault (Pump)

E25 also means a drain fault, but with a different cause from E24.

E24 is usually a blockage. The pump is fine — it just can’t push water through the blockage.

E25 is usually the pump itself. The filter and hoses are clear, but the pump isn’t running properly or has debris inside it.

Common causes:

A jammed pump impeller

A failed drain pump

A stuck check valve

Debris in the pump housing

What to do: clean the filter and check the hoses first. If they’re clear, test the drain pump.

For the full diagnostic sequence, see the Bosch Dishwasher E25 Fault Code guide.

E09 — Heating Fault

E09 means the heating circuit has failed. The machine isn’t heating the water.

Common causes:

A failed heating element

A failed temperature sensor

A failed control board

A wiring fault

What to do: check the heating element for continuity with a multimeter. Check the temperature sensor. If both test good, the fault is the control board.

E22 — Filter or Drain Fault

E22 usually points to a blocked filter or a drain fault. On some Bosch models, it can also indicate a water level sensor fault.

Common causes:

A clogged filter

Debris in the sump

A blocked drain hose

A faulty water level sensor

What to do: clean the filter first. Then check the drain path. If both are clear, test the water level sensor.

E17 — Water Inlet Fault

E17 means the machine isn’t filling properly. The water inlet valve may have failed, or the water supply may be restricted.

Common causes:

A closed water supply valve

A kinked inlet hose

A failed water inlet valve

A faulty flow meter

What to do: check the water supply valve is open. Check the inlet hose for kinks. Test the water inlet valve.

H01 — Heating Fault

H01 means the heating circuit has failed, similar to E09. The exact cause varies by model.

Common causes:

A failed heating element

A failed relay on the control board

A wiring fault

What to do: check the heating element for continuity. Check the relay and wiring.

Which Code Do You Have?

Seeing E15 specifically? It’s the most common Bosch dishwasher code, and the most misunderstood — it means water has collected in the base tray and tripped the flood switch, not that the control board has failed. Read the full E15 fault code diagnosis before ordering any parts.

Match your code to the section above. The three most common codes — E15, E24, and E25 — each have their own dedicated guide with the full diagnostic sequence, component testing, and repair-or-bin thresholds.

The other codes — E09, E22, E17, and H01 — are covered in the general Bosch Dishwasher guide.

How Bosch Fault Codes Work

Bosch dishwashers use a combination of sensors and monitoring circuits to detect faults. When a fault is detected, the control board displays the corresponding code and shuts down the cycle.

The code is not a diagnosis. It’s a starting point. Each code narrows the field, but the actual cause must be confirmed with testing.

For example, E15 means flood protection has triggered. The flood protection is a safety system. The actual fault could be a door seal, a hose, a sump seal, or overfilling. Only testing tells you which one.

Common Bosch Fault Codes At A Glance

E15: flood protection. Water in the base tray.

E24: drain fault. Blockage in the filter or hose.

E25: drain fault. Pump fault or debris in the pump.

E09: heating fault. Element, sensor, or board.

E22: filter or drain fault. Usually a blocked filter.

E17: water inlet fault. Valve or supply.

H01: heating fault. Element or relay.

Repair Cost Guide

Door seal: $20 to $50 for the part.

Drain hose: $10 to $30 for the part.

Drain pump: $30 to $80 for the part.

Heating element: $40 to $100 for the part.

Water inlet valve: $20 to $60 for the part.

When to Repair vs Bin

Repair if:

The fault is a filter, hose, seal, or pump

The dishwasher is under six years old

The repair cost is under half the cost of a comparable new machine

Bin if:

The control board has failed on a machine over eight years old

The machine has multiple failed components

The repair cost exceeds half the cost of a comparable new machine

Safety Warning

Electrical risk. Dishwashers run on mains voltage. Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker before removing any panel.

Water risk. The base tray and sump will contain water. Have towels and a shallow tray ready.

Sharp edges. Dishwasher components can have sharp edges. Handle with care.

FAQ

  1. It would be useful to add E18 and E:32-00 to the water-supply section for models that use those displays. Their inlet screen is separate from the filter inside the tub, so cleaning the tub filter does not address a restricted incoming supply. This guide explains that distinction and the external checks . Bosch’s own list also covers E18/E3200: https://www.bosch-home.com/us/owner-support/dishwashers/error-codes . Follow the full E-Nr.’s manual, and never bypass or immerse an AquaStop unit.
