HP Laptop Won’t Start?

HP Laptop Won’t Start? Here’s Why (And What To Check)

Your HP laptop won’t start. Maybe it’s completely dead. Maybe the power light comes on but nothing else happens. Maybe it beeps. Maybe it’s stuck on the HP logo. Maybe it charges but won’t turn on. Or maybe it stopped working after a BIOS update.

The good news is that HP laptops have a built-in diagnostic tool called HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. It tests every major component and tells you exactly which one has failed. That makes the diagnosis much easier than guessing.

In most cases, the fault is the power adapter, the RAM, or the storage drive — all of which are affordable to fix.

This page covers the eight most common HP start faults, the symptoms to look for, and the checks you can perform yourself. If you need the complete diagnostic sequence, the HP UEFI diagnostics, and the BIOS recovery steps, the full guide is linked at the bottom.

HP Laptop Won't Start

Quick Diagnosis

No power at all: a failed power adapter, a charging port fault, or a mainboard fault.

Power light but no boot: a RAM fault or a BIOS fault.

Beeping on startup: an HP POST code. Most indicate RAM faults.

Black screen but fans running: a display or display cable fault.

Stuck on HP logo: a storage drive fault.

Charging but not turning on: a battery or mainboard fault.

Won’t start after BIOS update: a corrupted BIOS. HP’s recovery procedure fixes most cases.

HP-specific boot issues: a BIOS configuration fault. Free to fix.

Why Your HP Laptop Won’t Start

An HP laptop needs several things to turn on:

The power adapter provides power

The charging circuit charges the battery and powers the laptop

The power button sends a signal to the mainboard

The mainboard boots the BIOS and checks the hardware

The display shows the boot screen

If any link fails, the laptop appears dead. The symptom tells you which link has failed.

HP laptops have a specific diagnostic tool: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. It tests the RAM, storage, battery, display, fan, keyboard, and touchpad, and reports Pass or Fail for each.

Common Causes

Failed power adapter. The most common cause. HP adapters are wattage-sensitive.

Failed RAM. The second most common cause. Often fixed by reseating.

Failed storage drive. Causes the laptop to stall at the HP logo.

Failed display or display cable. Causes a black screen with fans running.

Failed battery. Causes charging but no boot.

Corrupted BIOS. Usually after an interrupted update.

Failed mainboard. The least common cause and the most expensive to fix.

Symptoms To Look For

The symptom tells you which component is at fault.

No Power At All

A failed power adapter, charging port, or mainboard.

Power Light But No Boot

A RAM fault or a BIOS fault.

Beeping On Startup

An HP POST code. Count the beeps and look up the code.

Black Screen But Fans Running

A display or display cable fault. Connect an external monitor as a test.

Stuck On HP Logo

A storage drive fault. Enter BIOS and check whether the drive is detected.

Charging But Not Turning On

A battery or mainboard fault.

Won’t Start After BIOS Update

A corrupted BIOS. Try HP’s BIOS recovery.

HP-Specific Boot Issues

A BIOS configuration fault. Free to fix.

How to Diagnose the Fault

Step 1 — Check the Power Adapter

Confirm the adapter is the correct wattage for your HP model. Look at the label on the adapter.

Check the connector type. HP uses both barrel and USB-C connectors.

Step 2 — Perform a Power Drain

Hold the power button for 30 seconds with the laptop unplugged. This clears the capacitors and resets the power-on state.

Then plug in and try again.

Step 3 — Check for Beep Codes

If the laptop beeps, count the pattern. Most HP beep codes indicate RAM faults.

Step 4 — Reseat the RAM

Open the bottom panel. Remove each RAM stick, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol, and reseat.

Test one stick at a time.

Step 5 — Connect an External Monitor

If the laptop powers on but the screen is black, connect an external monitor. Press Windows + P to cycle display modes.

If the external monitor works, the fault is the laptop display or the display cable.

Step 6 — Enter BIOS and Check Drive Detection

Press Esc or F10 at startup to enter BIOS. Check whether the storage drive is detected.

If the drive isn’t detected, reseat it. If it still isn’t detected, the drive has failed.

Step 7 — Run HP UEFI Diagnostics

Press Esc at startup, then F2 for System Diagnostics.

HP UEFI diagnostics tests the RAM, storage, battery, display, fan, keyboard, and touchpad. It reports Pass or Fail for each.

Step 8 — Try BIOS Recovery

If the fault appeared after a BIOS update, try HP’s BIOS recovery. Hold Windows key + B or Windows key + V, plug in the adapter, and continue holding.

You’ll need a USB flash drive with the BIOS recovery file from HP’s support site.

Fixing Specific HP Faults

HP Laptop Won’t Turn On

The general fault. Check the power adapter wattage first. Then perform a power drain.

HP Laptop Not Turning On But Charging

A battery or mainboard fault. Perform a power drain, then test the RAM.

HP Laptop Won’t Turn On Black Screen

A display or display cable fault. Connect an external monitor.

HP Laptop Beeping On Startup

An HP POST code. Most indicate RAM faults. Reseat the RAM.

HP Laptop Stuck On HP Logo

A storage drive fault. Enter BIOS and check whether the drive is detected.

HP Laptop Won’t Turn On After Update

A corrupted BIOS. Try HP’s BIOS recovery.

HP Pavilion Won’t Turn On

The diagnostic sequence is the same across HP models. Check the adapter first.

HP Envy Won’t Turn On

Same sequence. Envy models have soldered RAM on some configurations.

HP Spectre Won’t Turn On

Same sequence. Spectre models have soldered RAM on most configurations.

Repair Cost Guide

Power adapter: $30 to $80.

Charging port repair: $80 to $150 fitted.

RAM: $20 to $60.

SSD: $40 to $120.

Battery: $40 to $100.

Display: $80 to $250 fitted.

Mainboard: $150 to $400 fitted.

When to Repair vs Bin

Repair if:

The fault is the power adapter, RAM, storage, or display

The laptop is under four years old

The repair cost is under half the cost of a comparable new laptop

The laptop has no other faults

Bin if:

The mainboard has failed on a laptop over five years old

The laptop has multiple failed components

The repair cost exceeds half the cost of a comparable new laptop

The fault is liquid damage that’s reached the mainboard

Safety Warning

Electrical risk. Laptop batteries are a fire risk if punctured, bent, or crushed. Do not attempt to remove a swollen battery.

Display risk. The display flex cables and ribbon cables are thin and fragile.

Tool risk. Never use metal tools inside a charging port or against a battery.

Screw risk. HP screws are different lengths. Putting a long screw in a short hole punches through the mainboard.
